Research - Dr. Alison Hardy

Research

My research has naturally grown from my time as a D&T teacher and from my experiences as a head of department and a teacher educator. This work includes three distinct areas: understanding the value and purpose of D&T, collating design and technology knowledge, as well as developing academic writing.

My research has naturally grown from my time as a D&T teacher and from my experiences as a head of department and a teacher educator. This work includes three distinct areas: understanding the value and purpose of D&T, collating design and technology knowledge, as well as developing academic writing.

Valuing D&T

‘What’s the point of D&T?’ is a question I have spent several years researching. Unsurprisingly, the answers are wide-ranging. But, not only am I curious about what people value about D&T and how these values affect people’s behaviour and attitude towards the subject, but also where these values come from. What I’ve come to believe is that the values we hold about D&T, or indeed any subject, are shaped by many factors such as school experiences, gender as well as the values of teachers and peers. In turn, our values will influence our attitude and behaviour towards D&T, the values of others – and so the cycle continues.

I’ve written and talked a lot about the value of D&T, and if you want to know more, you could start with my article ‘Why do we teach D&T?’.

What do you think?
Let me leave you with a question: I work with teachers and schools to help them understand how they and their pupils value D&T and incorporate their viewpoints and insights into my work. So, my question to you is, why do you think D&T should be taught in schools?

Redesigning D&T

In my work with Professor Eddie Norman we focus on the nature of D&T and its content with a particular interest in design epistemology, something which many talk and write about but don’t often agree on or define. We explore different definitions and explanations of knowledge that is used by teachers to plan lessons, and by designers in their practice. We share our thinking about what design and technology knowledge and curriculum content is on my podcast and in our book and Redesigning D&T…Talking…Thinking. Working with academics and practitioners, we are creating space to talk and think about the position and nature design and technology knowledge.

You can listen to our first conversation about redesigning D&T in episode 28 Eddie and Alison talking about D&T and epistemology

In October 2022 I am launching a new research project Redesigning D&T. I would love D&T teachers to get involved either as part of the project team or the expert group. Listen to the podcast in October to here more.

Building a research community

Moving from teaching into teacher education and higher education had many challenges, one was the expectation that I would write and publish my thinking and research in blogs, magazines and journal articles. As a former D&T teacher, I have increased my confidence and skill in publishing my work by writing with others. I now provide support programmes for D&T teachers who want to write but don’t know where to start. I’m thrilled that many of the teachers who have joined my programmes have published their work, sharing their ideas and research with the D&T community and beyond.

Another challenge I faced, as do many D&T teachers, is finding and using published research. I launched a new knowledge exchange project in 2022 to build research capacity and engagement in D&T education. The project supports teachers, academics, and subject leads by breaking down the silos that often limit knowledge sharing. We launched a new podcast, Researching D&T Education, and website where D&T teachers can easily find published research.
