About me - Dr. Alison Hardy

About Me

I’m an Associate Professor, writer and podcaster. I help shape the practise and future of design and technology education through my research, published resources and lots of conversations with lovely people throughout the D&T education community.

Where I work now

I currently work within the Nottingham Institute of Education at Nottingham Trent University (NTU). I supervise doctoral candidates and lead on knowledge exchange activities in education.

Research interests

My research focuses on ‘The value and purpose of design and technology (D&T) education’. I’m fascinated by this area and have identified a diverse range of values attributed to D&T across a number of stakeholders. I also explore design and technology curriculum – what it is and how it’s taught.

Publications and podcast

I edit the Learning to Teach Design and Technology in the Secondary School (4th edition), Debates in Design and Technology (2nd edition) and host the Talking D&T podcast. Explore my podcasts

Supporting writers

After completing Professor Rowena Murray‘s Retreat Facilitator training, I began organising retreats at NTU and for other organisations in 2015. I also coordinate retreats and writing workshops online for academics and teachers.

Hands-on teaching experience

After graduating from Brunel University in 1992, I spent a year teaching in Pilsen (Czech Republic) at the University of West Bohemia. There I then went on to teach, in the main, English at both primary and secondary school level, as well as electronics to university students.

On returning to the UK, I taught and led design and technology in secondary schools for a further 11 years. During this time, I completed my MA and was a lead practitioner for the Specialist Schools Trust. On leaving secondary school teaching, I spent four years as a senior manager in further education, where I was responsible for leading 14-19 curriculum developments in partnership with over 25 schools across the East Midlands.

I love to talk about D&T … a lot!

To me, design and technology are far more than an interest, you might even call it an obsession. I love to talk to people about design and technology, I lead research about D&T, plus I also lead on thinking about design and technology knowledge.
