FAQ SV388

SV388 SYSTEM FAQ

Subscriber-only episode

I discuss AI in D&T education with insights from my recent chat with   Joanne Taylor. I explore in more depth the paper from the PATT 40 conference that probes the dual nature of AI as both a creative catalyst and a potential disruptor for future creativity. In this episode I take a deep dive into the use of AI for generating images from text and the implications of teaching such technology in schools.

Joanne's observations on Tuesday set the stage for an exploration of AI's role within the classroom and beyond, showcasing how it can serve as a design strategy on par with traditional methods like brainstorming. I'll share how AI is not just another tool but a  piece of conceptual knowledge.

This week I'm critiquing some published work to give an insight into how anyone can look at research to hold it to account.
As teachers and school leaders are begin encouraged to be research informed I think we also need to be research literate, this involves being able to evaluate whether a piece of research is 'good'. In this episode I use four criteria to evaluate Pearson's published research to answer the question: is this a good research project?

The criteria used are:

  1. What is the research question or aim?
  2. What is the methodology and method?
  3. Who are the participants?
  4. Does the evidence justify the claims?

In this episode I mention:

Let's talk about knowledge in D&T – event on 12th August

Christine Counsell’s definitions of substantive and disciplinary knowledge:

'Substantive knowledge is the content that teachers teach as established fact – whether common convention, concept or warranted account of reality.'

'Disciplinary knowledge, by contrast, is a curricular term for what pupils learn about how that knowledge was established, its degree of certainty and how it continues to be revised by scholars, artists or professional practice. It is that part of the subject where pupils understand each discipline as a tradition of enquiry with its own distinctive pursuit of truth.’

Quoted from: Counsell, C. 2018. Taking curriculum seriously. Impact Journal of the Chartered College of Teaching.
